Starting with an acknowledgement that we are surrounded by division and dysfunction, Matthew D. Kim and Paul A. Hoffman follow with an admission that the church is full of the same divisions in the world. They conclude “many Christians are behaving boorishly” likely due to issues of compromise and idolatry.

They are having this conversation in Preaching to a Divided Nation: A Seven -Step Model for Promoting Reconciliation and Unity where despite the seriousness of our situation, they “remain hopeful homileticians – dedicated practitioners who love God and his church.” In fact, they believe the pulpit has become even more important. They might consider that we find ourselves in a preaching emergency.

I couldn’t agree more. And I love this statement, “We are convinced that all gospel heralds now have a greater opportunity to intentionally and winsomely use their platforms to proclaim the holy Scriptures in a way that promotes reconciliation and unity.”
